Scrolls and Comparisons: Exploring Instagram's Impact on the Emotional Well-Being of U.S. College Students

Thu, April 24, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 403

Abstract

Social media use, particularly on platforms like Instagram, is a significant yet underexplored factor in college students' emotional well-being. This study examines how different social media use patterns and comparison behaviors on Instagram impact undergraduates' mental health. Preliminary findings indicate that passive social media use and ability comparisons significantly contribute to negative emotions among students. Through semi-structured interviews with 40 diverse students, this research seeks to provide students with insights into how their social media habits influence their emotional well-being and offer strategies to manage these effects. Additionally, the study will inform higher education institutions about necessary actions to develop policies, workshops, and resources that promote healthier social media use and support student mental health.
