Abstract

This paper explores the narratives of four white instructors from a Midwest community college identified for effective practices supporting their Black and Latino male students. Using critical whiteness studies, the analysis reveals each of the educators had experiences that challenged their white racial frame; took personal responsibility to learn more about the effects of systemic racism and classism; and built meaningful, trust-based relationships with their diverse students, which in turn, developed their own cultural competence. In discussion, authors critique white saviorism and emphasize the need for continual critical reflexivity and institutional integration of policies, practices, and culture that foster an inclusive environment for all students.
