International Doctoral Students’ Experiences in U.S. Institutions of Higher Learning: A Meta-Synthesis

Thu, April 24, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 107

Abstract

International Doctoral Students (IDS) contribute immensely to U.S. higher education and the economy. However, this interdisciplinary field faces significant challenges that jeopardize IDS’ ability to succeed. Drawing on Cultural Capital theory, which posits that individuals possess various forms of capital influencing their social mobility, we identified challenges IDS encounter and strategies used to overcome them, facilitating successful completion of doctoral degrees and integration into the workforce. A meta-synthesis of 40 qualitative studies revealed four main themes: (a) linguistic and social-cultural barriers, (b) institutional inadequacies, (c) financial constraints, and (d) strategies for overcoming challenges faced by IDS. This research provides important insights for university administrators and policymakers to foster a more inclusive and supportive learning environment and process for IDS.
