Dismantling Complacency of HSIs: Pursuing Rightful Presence of Latine/x CC-Transfer Students Through a “Servingness” Framework

Sat, April 26, 9:50 to 11:20am MDT (9:50 to 11:20am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 2-3

Abstract

This theoretical proposal explores the need for “structures for serving” Latine/x community college transfer students at four-year Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) through a redefined framework of “servingness.” Integrating concepts of rightful presence and community cultural wealth, it highlights the cultural assets and experiences of Latine/x students, moving beyond deficit perspectives. The framework proposes that mentoring programs grounded in these principles can foster belonging and reduce dropout rates by recognizing and valuing the cultural contributions of Latine/x students. By advocating for an institutional identity that prioritizes the unique needs and strengths of Latine/x CC-transfer students, this framework aims to drive sustainable changes in HSI practices and policies, enhancing their mission to serve this community effectively.
