Co-Designers’ Responses to a Speculative Design Probe (Poster 33)

Sun, April 27, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

Co-design is an approach where co-designers (e.g., researchers and community partners) engage in a collaborative design process to address a problem of practice. Co-design has become increasingly common to develop educational tools and systems, yet there is much to learn about how co-design happens and unpack the impact of different methods. In this paper, we share part of our co-design process where we used a speculative design probe to explore opportunities for design while imagining possible futures and systems change. We found that while most responses were pragmatic and actionable, often imagining if things could be done differently. We highlight two challenges including not being able to respond to the probe and focusing on what others can contribute.
