Abstract

This paper investigates the trends of private contract teachers in Washington State public schools as a response to teacher shortages and shifting educational needs. Private contract teachers, hired through individual or third-party agreements, differ from traditional employment models in terms of job security, compensation, and certification. This study analyzes data from 2002-2022, focusing on the distribution, demographic profiles, and employment patterns of these teachers. Findings reveal fluctuations in the number of contract teachers. Contract teachers tend to have less experience and receive lower pay compared to their traditionally employed counterparts. This research highlights the implications for teacher diversity, equity, and retention, and suggests a need for further exploration of this evolving employment model.
