Abstract

In line with this year’s conference theme of repair and renewal, this methodological process paper connects arts-based research and dialogic spiral to humanize research with diverse preservice elementary teachers (DPSETs). Humanizing pedagogy, specifically dialogic education, provides the theoretical framework for the study described within the essay. The essay addresses the question: How do practices of listening converge with acts of art-making and collective sense-making; and how can these acts foster innovations in critical research with DPSETs? Each part of the art-integrated dialogic spiral is described alongside examples from a critical comparative case study that uses artwork and focus group interviews to explore DPSETs’ understanding and interpretations of a professional attributes policy used within their preparation program.
