Abstract

This systematic review examines research on ChatGPT in language learning published between November 2022 and November 2023. Using the PRISMA framework, 36 articles were selected and analyzed. Key findings include: (1) Global interest, with Asia and North America leading contributions; (2) Wide distribution across disciplines, highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of the topic; (3) Dominance of empirical research, focusing on higher education and ethical considerations; (4) ChatGPT’s multifaceted roles in supporting self-directed learning, content generation, and teacher workflows. Research gaps identified include the need for diversified scopes, longitudinal studies, exploration of stakeholders’ perceptions, and assessments of feedback quality. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of research on ChatGPT in language learning and offers directions for future studies.
