Gamifying "Introduction to Statistics": Playing for Keeps (Poster 3)

Sat, April 26, 3:20 to 4:50pm MDT (3:20 to 4:50pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

This paper outlines how to transform a typical introductory course in statistics (at the AP, undergraduate or graduate level) into a gamified and inclusive experience with an escape room theme. In this evidenced-based redesign, I first review the research on students’ tolerance for risk in math, the importance of diverse role models in the profession, and how gamification can offer a potential solution to increasing diverse student retention and success. I then detail how to redesign a standard introductory course using free and low-cost resources to increase students’ understanding and enjoyment of statistics.
