Abstract

The “GuARdians of Tomorrow” project uses augmented reality (AR) to enhance science education. It links climate awareness with actionable learning. Focused on middle school educators in two states of the American South and Southwest, it involves co-designing effective AR experiences for climate literacy. This study with eight teachers assessed the project's effectiveness in exploring local climate change’s causes and effects. We focused on the design framework for this project (called ARISE), which emphasizes agency, relevancy, immediacy, scaffolding, and empathy. Findings from teacher’s feedback demonstrate AR’s feasibility and acceptance in education, offering valuable insights for further development and broader implementation. The project’s ultimate goal is to boost scientific literacy, engagement, and environmental stewardship from students through immersive AR experiences.
