Sat, April 26, 5:10 to 6:40pm MDT (5:10 to 6:40pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 4

Abstract

This study examined the mediating roles of sleep quality and mathematics behavioral engagement (MBE) between problematic smartphone use (PSU) and mathematics achievement. After a two-stage stratified sampling, 1645 fourth graders from southern China completed a paper test of mathematics achievement and an online questionnaire. The results showed: (1) boys have more problems with smartphone use than girls, and students with lower SES are more likely to be problematic smartphone users;(2) PSU is negatively correlated with mathematics achievement;(3) MBE plays a partial mediating role between PSU and mathematics achievement;(4) the relationship between PSU and mathematics achievement was mediated by sleep quality and MBE in turn. The implications and suggestions of this study are discussed.
