Abstract

Research on dropout in educational settings such as Vocation Education and Training (VET) or Higher Education often neglects different directions of dropout intentions. Our study addresses this by examining how factors across six dimensions of dropout reasons (learner, professional, company, school, activity, and context) affect four directions of dropout intention (upwards, downwards, horizontal: occupational or company change) in VET. Using data from 559 trainees in Germany, stepwise regression analyses reveal that occupational identity and desired occupation, cooperation between learning venues, and year in training have the strongest associations with the directions of dropout intention. We recommend that VET stakeholders adopt preventive strategies targeting dropout directions and the factors associated with the six dimensions of dropout reasons to mitigate dropout rates.
