Using interview and survey data gathered over the 2023-24 school year, we report on K-12 leaders’ perceptions about how using AI in K-12 schools may contribute to exacerbating or remedying current inequities, and then draw some recommendations for practice. This study shows that several K-12 leaders have already gained a nuanced awareness of both positive and negative implications of AI for two key dimensions of equity in K-12 education - the digital divide and inclusive education. This, in turn, suggests the need for K-12 leaders to take into consideration both “missing the boat” and “sinking the boat” risks with respect to equity when evaluating proposed AI-based innovations for their schools.
