Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming education, serving as both a teaching and learning tool as well as curriculum content. Recognizing the need for a holistic approach due to the multitude of AI competence, a framework including five competence dimensions is suggested. Yet, it is unclear whether effective instructional designs to facilitate AI competence need to adhere to distinct student groups with varying levels of AI. For this purpose, the data of 705 university students have been analyzed to identify the potential differences in their competence levels. The results show four clusters, ranging from highly competent students to students at risk of being left behind regarding their AI readiness, suggesting personalized learning environments for AI competence development.
