Abstract

Education researchers typically include categorical descriptors during empirical inquiry. Race and ethnicity data are often collected, but with varying intentions. The proposed paper interrogates the unexamined use of race and ethnicity as variables in educational research. The aim of this work is to craft an agenda to research, remedy, and repair these variables in educational research surveys. Guided by the QuantCrit tenets, we examined dialogue, deliberation, and writings of seven scholars who gathered to investigate the use of race and ethnicity as a variable in survey research. Our discussion led to an awareness of the historical context and the realization of how race and ethnicity variables in surveys perpetuate hegemonic role of race and ethnicity in the American society.
