This paper presents arguments for and methods toward transcription of speech that uses elements of discourse analysis in order to better represent the culture and linguistic varieties of participants. Through this representation, educational research can better confront implicit and explicit bias toward Standard(ized) English, particularly when this bias can effectively erase non-dominant linguistic practices and cultures from research and therefore from the field of education. Three transcription approaches are presented and analyzed to demonstrate how the tools of discourse analysis can create more inclusive and equitable participant research.
