Fri, April 25, 9:50 to 11:20am MDT (9:50 to 11:20am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 2-3

Abstract

In recent years, education has shifted towards learner-centered approaches, social-emotional learning, and technology integration, influencing a corresponding evolution in assessment practices. This study examines the current landscape of assessment in higher education, advocating for authentic assessments that prioritize equity, diversity, inclusion, and student well-being. Findings from instructors (n=404) who responded to an online survey indicate a growing interest in alternative assessment practices, despite significant structural, administrative, and technological challenges. By reconceptualizing these challenges as catalysts for constructive discourse, this research aims to provide valuable insights for institutional leaders, administrators, and instructors. The goal is to advocate for effective assessment strategies that not only foster student development, but also support the achievement of educational goals in today's dynamic higher education environment.
