Por Nosotras, Para Nosotras: Amplifying Testimonios of Latina and Afro-Latina College Experiences Amidst Anti-DEI Legislation

Thu, April 24, 9:50 to 11:20am MDT (9:50 to 11:20am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 708

Abstract

Education has become increasingly politicized (e.g.; H.B 7. FL. Reg. Sess, 2022; S.B. 266. FL. Reg. Sess, 2023). Aiming to capture the testimonios (Reyes & Curry Rodríguez, 2012) of Latina and Afro-Latinx women, this work amplifies voices typically void in the literature (Abraído-Lanza, et al, 2022; Feu & Padilla, 2023). Informed by the guiding research question—"How do Latinas and Afro-Latinas interact with supportive systems and systemic barriers within higher education?"—our preliminary findings explore the self-identity formation of Latinas and the distinctive experiences within post-secondary education settings. This collaborative work contributes to the broader endeavor of documenting and comprehending the multifaceted realities of Latina and Afro-Latina students, serving as a call to action to key stakeholders in education.
