The Fulbright Paradox? The Fulbright Program, Race, and the Cultural Cold War

Fri, April 25, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 2B

Abstract

The Fulbright Paradox refers to Senator Fulbright's legacy as both a humanistic internationalist and a senator who consistently supported racial segregation. This study explores how Senator Fulbright's legacy is framed in contemporary literature, and how race and gender played a role in the everyday administration and experiences of the Fulbright Program and its participants in the early Cold War. The focus on the international higher education complicates dominant narratives of this paradox.
