Abstract

Limited research has examined how L2 learners use generative AI to self-regulate their learning and its relationship with L2 self-efficacy and L2 interest. This study developed and validated the Generative AI-based Self-regulated L2 Learning Questionnaire (GAISRLLQ), comprising five dimensions: goal setting, goal attainment, interaction strategy, academic integrity, and self-evaluation. Data from 214 Chinese EFL students revealed these dimensions accounted for 67.3% of the scale's total variance. Descriptive analysis showed students most frequently regulated academic integrity, but paid least attention to interaction strategy. Importantly, the study found L2 self-efficacy mediated the relationship between L2 interest and GAISRLL, providing insights into the underlying mechanisms. These findings can contribute to students’ effective use of GenAI in L2 learning.
