The Role of Whiteness in the Experiences of Bilingual Education: A Critical Autoethnography

Sun, April 27, 9:50 to 11:20am MDT (9:50 to 11:20am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

Through a lens of Critical White Studies and Transculturality, this study examines how whiteness impacts the transcultural experiences of bilingual education. Using critical autoethnography, my experiences as a white bilingual educator are compared and contrasted to those of two Latina bilingual educators via semi-structured interviews. The analysis of interview data highlights the ways in which whiteness overtly and covertly continues to permeate bilingual education and serves as both an obstacle to and impetus for the social justice goals of bilingual education.
