2024 LGBTQ+ Educator Survey

Sat, April 26, 5:10 to 6:40pm MDT (5:10 to 6:40pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

Abstract: The underrepresentation of LGBTQ+ educators reflects a broader issue within public education. Openly LGBTQ+ teachers and allies positively influence educational outcomes for all students because representation of marginalized groups significantly impacts students' lives. Supporting LGBTQ+ educators increases their likelihood of entering and remaining in the teaching profession, thus improving student outcomes and addressing the teacher shortage. The current political debate, including efforts to block LGBTQ+ representation in schools through book bans and “Don’t Say Gay” legislation, underscores the need to support LGBTQ+ educators. This research aims to fill the gap in the literature by examining how changes in popular culture and federal legislation have impacted school climates for LGBTQ+ educators considering a politically divisive environment.
