This critical narrative review investigates the factors affecting rural students' enrollment in postsecondary institutions, with a specific focus on the intersectionality of race and gender through the lens of Critical Race Theory (CRT). The study critiques the prevalent deficit-based perspective that often attributes educational challenges to individual student deficiencies rather than examining systemic barriers. Moreover, by applying CRT and Intersectionality, the review reveals how systemic inequities—such as inadequate school resources, limited access to college preparatory materials, and negative community perceptions—intersect with race and gender to impact educational outcomes. These insights aim to drive meaningful change in educational systems, ensuring that rural students can navigate and succeed in higher education.
