New Conservatives in the Brazilian Congress: The Advancement of the Anti-Trans Agenda in Education

Fri, April 25, 9:50 to 11:20am MDT (9:50 to 11:20am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 105

Abstract

In many countries, there have been attempts to restrict the rights of trans people and the teaching of gender issues in schools. This paper aims to identify and analyze the arguments presented in bills that restrict the rights of the trans and travesti people in Brazil. We found 47 bills that address education. The results show the use of arguments in favor of protecting family values and defending the rights of children and adolescents, which are believed to be violated during the teaching of gender and sexuality diversity in schools. Ultimately, these approaches seek to stifle critical thinking and tolerance, transforming schools into inflexible institutions meant solely for the training of students without intellectual autonomy and contact with diversity.
