Abstract

Family members, teachers, counselors, peers, and church members are influential in African American students’ college choice. These individuals make up students’ communities. However, research does not consider the role of their communities as a whole in college choice. This paper includes findings from two qualitative studies—a pilot and the subsequent study—that explored how family and culture shape college choice for African Americans. Data were collected through interviews with thirteen first-year, African American students. The findings showed family, school, and church communities as a whole encourage these students and can set the expectation for them to attend college. Remedy and repair in education for African Americans means recognizing the importance of the whole community for these students.
