Abstract

The need for a comprehensive understanding of the Grade 9 de-streamed (de-tracked) mathematics curriculum and practical models and strategies for its implementation has grown significantly in the Ontario education system since 2021. This research is part of an SSHRC-funded initiative, "Creating Equitable Structures in Early Secondary School Mathematics," which aims to explore inclusive teaching methods that provide all students with equitable opportunities for success in learning mathematics. This study primarily examines the Building Thinking Classrooms approach, focusing on enhancing teacher practices to effectively deliver the Grade 9 de-streamed math curriculum in mixed-ability classrooms. The new de-streamed curriculum requires teachers to develop skills in supporting students of varying abilities in problem-solving, collaboration, and other key competencies.
