Emphasizing Equity-centered Leadership: Leading Challenged Schools

Sat, April 26, 5:10 to 6:40pm MDT (5:10 to 6:40pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 705

Abstract

This discussion explores a newly developed course centered on leading challenged schools which emphasizes equity-centered leadership. This course involved a mini research project applying the Mid-Atlantic Equity Consortium (MAEC; 2021) Equity Audit to aid in reflection, help identify, and address equity issues within participants' schools. Students also engaged in an exercise to develop their own definitions of equity, fostering a deeper understanding and personal connection to the concept. The course was guided by the foundational text by Radd et al. (2021), the Five Practices for Equity-Focused School Leadership. This panelist will share an overview of the course structure, key assignments, and feedback from students, highlighting how these components collectively contributed to developing the competencies necessary for leading schools with diverse student populations and limited resources, ensuring equitable opportunities for all students to succeed.
