Students’ Perceived Affordances of Three Representations in Greek Trade Network Activity (Poster 5)

Thu, April 24, 1:45 to 3:15pm MDT (1:45 to 3:15pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

Abstract: This study examines middle school students’ reflections on a Greek Trade Network Activity to understand how they perceive the affordances of different representations designed by researchers and what challenges they face in this process. This study aims to help students recognize the value of different representations for future use while learning disciplinary content by embedding physical activities, maps, and network visualizations into a history classroom for both content and data literacy learning. The study demonstrates the value of combining and contrasting different data visualizations with physical and traditional representations to support students in recognizing the value and different affordances of different kinds of representation and how they complement each other.
