Abstract

Cultural conflicts are disproportionately affecting social studies teachers in the post-truth era. Many social studies teachers are deciding to leave the field, citing post-truth politics in their choice to leave. This research explores the interplay between sociopolitical discourse and the attrition of social studies teachers, shedding light on the nuanced factors contributing to their departure from the classroom. Through interviews with three former social studies teachers, the study employs a critical discourse analysis framed within the lens of critical literacy. Findings revealed a predominant sense of demoralization among teachers, driven by the infiltration of sociopolitical issues into their classrooms in the post-truth era. This study expands its scope by unveiling power structures within the classroom between teachers and broader society.
