Thu, April 24, 3:35 to 5:05pm MDT (3:35 to 5:05pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 4

Abstract

This study investigates factors influencing the sense of belonging (SoB) in synchronous online learning environments. Using an explanatory sequential mixed-method design, data were collected from 184 students through surveys and focus group interviews. Findings highlight the critical roles of instructor support, peer interaction, and learning climate in fostering SoB. The study integrates Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Strayhorn’s Model of SoB, and the Community of Inquiry framework to provide comprehensive insights. Practical recommendations for enhancing SoB in online learning are discussed, aligning with the AERA 2025 theme of addressing educational disparities and promoting equitable education renewal.
