Abstract

This systematic review examines the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in self-regulated learning (SRL) within higher education. Using a qualitative approach, we analyzed 14 empirical studies that utilized AI tools, like chatbots and adaptive feedback systems, to enhance SRL. The findings highlight AI's potential in supporting the forethought, performance, and reflection phases of SRL, while also noting challenges such as dependency and feedback overload. The review emphasizes the need for balanced AI integration to leverage technological benefits without diminishing student self-efficacy. It calls for further research to refine this integration, ensuring AI is a complementary element in the SRL framework of higher education.
