Abstract

This study explores the unique nature of accountability in China’s education system, where cultural constraints, rather than strict regulations, play a significant role. Central to this approach are the emotional systems of shame and honor, which drive teachers to adhere to high standards and improve their practices. However, this mechanism can also lead to emotional exploitation, as teachers may experience significant psychological stress and moral struggles. The pressure to conform to societal expectations and maintain personal honor can be burdensome. Therefore, a balanced accountability system should integrate various mechanisms to support teachers' well-being, ensuring that the emotional impact of accountability does not undermine their professional and personal health.
