The Association of Physical Condition of Schools With Absenteeism and Test Scores in Maryland

Fri, April 25, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 4

Abstract

Poor physical school conditions have been linked to worse student performance, lower test scores, and higher rates of chronic absenteeism. We analyzed data on the physical conditions of schools together with data on absenteeism and test scores for all K-12 schools in Maryland. Schools in the 10th decile for poor physical conditions experienced significantly higher rates of chronic absenteeism and significantly lower SAT, ACT, and Maryland state test scores. Black and Hispanic students were significantly more likely to attend these schools. These results indicate that inequity in school facilities may have important educational consequences.
