Abstract

This study examines faculty caregivers' experiences during the pandemic, revealing significant challenges in work-life balance and exposing flaws in the application of neoliberal ideologies in higher education. Through in-depth interviews with twelve faculty members, perceptions of colleague and institutional support, workload changes, and caregiving responsibilities are explored. Findings highlight a gender divide, with women disproportionately burdened by workload and caregiving duties. The study uncovers inadequate institutional support, tensions surrounding academic promotion, and challenges with work-life balance. These experiences challenge assumptions of equality and meritocracy in academia, emphasizing the need for more holistic, empathetic approaches to faculty support. Implications for faculty development include the role of centers for teaching and learning in promoting work-life balance and advocating for policy changes.
