Abstract

ELs are a rapidly growing population of students. There is little research on how Catholic schools serve ELs. This study reports on a national survey of Catholic schools to explore the prevalence of ELs and extent to which schools are equipped to meet their needs. Survey responses were received from 654 leaders, representing 11% of US Catholic schools. Results indicated that almost 90% of schools serve at least some ELs. Most leaders didn't feel that their school was equipped to serve ELs. Those schools that participated in specific professional development or had teachers certified in ENL reported higher levels of knowledge and instructional competence for teaching ELs. Implications point to additional data tracking and support for ELs in Catholic schools.
