Abstract

Following the Motivation and Engagement Wheel, a psychological framework of student engagement, this 3-wave longitudinal study examined the relationships among student motivation, engagement, and desirable learning outcomes in China. A sample of 1477 undergraduates from two Chinese universities participated in the three rounds of survey, with an interval of about six months. The findings supported the reliability and construct validity of the revised measurement tools, and largely confirmed the longitudinal relationships hypothesized between students’ motivation, engagement and desirable learning outcomes assessed by overall satisfaction and academic efficacy. These results underscore the necessity of employing a longitudinal design in student engagement research and emphasize the mediating role of adaptive engagement in the processes of university student learning.
