Teaching Information Technology in U.S. High School Classrooms: A Scoping Review

Wed, April 23, 12:40 to 2:10pm MDT (12:40 to 2:10pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 402

Abstract

Employment in computing and information technology (IT) occupations is projected to grow faster than the average for all other occupations from 2020 to 2030. Using the Antecedents-Decisions-Outcomes (ADO) theoretical framework, this systematic scoping review explores the existing literature on IT education in high schools. Inclusion criteria are articles on computing or IT education in a high school published between 2013 and 2023 and written in English. Five databases focused on education and computing were searched, and potential articles (n=1505) were identified. A narrative synthesis was performed for the articles (n=71) included. This review establishes a basis for research aimed at correcting injustices in educational systems and guiding IT education toward equitable renewal.
