Critical Entanglements: What Advocacy Podcast Journalism Can Teach Us About Research Ethics

Fri, April 25, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 4

Abstract

This paper conducts a Critical Narrative Analysis (Souto-Manning, 2012) of three excerpted scenes from the Pulitzer Prize winning podcast, Suave (Futuro Studios 2022) to consider how activist journalism might influence discussions regarding ethics and activism in critical qualitative research and show what the relationship between a journalist and her source might teach qualitative researchers about ethical and critical entanglements with participant-collaborators. We argue that an ethics of care and dialog is vital for doing meaningful work with marginalized communities, that this often falls outside the purview of IRB, and that researchers must be willing to take risks on behalf of the communities with whom they work. Ultimately, our analysis challenges ethical norms and structures to do work that centers justice.
