We examine schoolchildren's attitudes towards immigration in response to the allocation of migration centers in Slovenia. In the midst of the so-called European migration crisis, Hungary's border closure with Serbia and Croatia in the fall of 2015 caused a sudden shift in the Balkan migration route used by migrants seeking asylum in Europe. Slovenia became the main entry point into Western Europe for migrants using this route, prompting the government to improvise temporary migration centers. Analyzing data collected in Slovenia a few months after these events and some additional data, we show that eighth graders in schools located near migration centers were less likely to agree that immigrants should have the right to preserve features of their identity.
