Social Death in School: A Critical Literature Review of Racialized Discipline

Wed, April 23, 4:20 to 5:50pm MDT (4:20 to 5:50pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

This critical literature review explores Black students’ perspectives of racialized discipline through the theoretical lens of BlackCrit. While decades of research examine racial disparities in discipline, a dearth of research has examined the topic from a BlackCrit lens. As such, I engage the following research questions: (a) How do Black students make sense of racialized discipline? (b) How does school discipline operate to maintain social death? Using the theoretical lens of BlackCrit and the antiblack aggressions model as an analytical framework, I examine student perspectives of racialized discipline.
