This study examines the integration of social justice into mathematics by focusing on displaced persons, migration, and the availability of resources through modeling and data analysis in teaching methods courses. Leveraging a cross-university lesson study approach, the research team investigated the challenges and complexities of designing lessons that effectively balance these elements across two universities in the Midwest and Southwest United States. The poster session will detail the design, implementation, and resultant findings emphasizing preservice teachers’ perceptions. Using the collaborative lesson study model- comprising study, plan, teach, and reflect- this research offers valuable insights into effective pedagogical practices for meaningfully blending mathematics and social justice instruction as well as possibilities for improving teacher education through lesson study.
