Creating Affinity Group Programming for Black Girls Through School-Community Partnerships

Sat, April 26, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

Black girls endure racialized and gendered violence in K-12 education that result in them being pushed out of schools, permanently removed from educational opportunities and institutions. This research study explores how school principals collaborate with Black Girls Rock (BGR), a local non-profit organization, focused on enhancing Black girls’ educational journeys. This study will contain semi-structured interviews guided by Black Feminist Qualitative Inquiry with organization leaders, school principals, social workers and village builders, and after-school group facilitators. The research questions driving this study are: How do elementary and middle school principals in a predominantly white, midwestern-town support community organizations to ensure after-school programming for Black girls is successful? What are the challenges these principals face in creating these spaces?
