Abstract

This critical content analysis examines a text set of Pura Belpré Illustrator Award winning books (2020-2024) through a translanguaging lens. The study analyzes translanguaging practices that are illustrated in the text set and discusses how teacher educators can use these linguistic representations in language teaching methods courses designed for future teachers of ethnolinguistically diverse students. The findings reveal that each book in the text set displays linguistic and sociocultural components of translanguaging that can be used to offer pre-service teachers insight into bi/multilingual linguistic and cultural practices. This study has significant implications for how literature can be used as a resource for teaching translanguaging pedagogy to pre-service teachers, a way to remedy and repair racial and linguistic separation in schools.
