Making Math Tangible: Designing and Creating Digitally Fabricated Math Tools for Standards-Based K-12 Contexts (Poster 36)

Sun, April 27, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

This session provides research-based findings about K-12 and higher education mathematics educators designing and creating digitally fabricated math tools that are aligned with K-12 mathematics standards. As part of the study, participants explored a variety of laser-cut and 3D printed mathematics tools such as golden ratio tiles, aperiodic tessellating tiles, and a 3D printed visual proof of Pythagorean Theorem. Participants were then introduced to computer-aided design (CAD) software and taught how to create their own designs that could be manufactured on a laser cutter. This session describes lessons learned from the workshops and shares three examples of standards-aligned designs that the participants created as part of the study.
