Integrating Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Pedagogies to Affirm Students’ Intersectional Identities in Urban Schooling Contexts

Thu, April 24, 5:25 to 6:55pm MDT (5:25 to 6:55pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 104

Abstract

This paper explores the integration of Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Pedagogy (CLRP) in urban classrooms, highlighting two case studies where teachers engage students' intersectional identities and disrupt raciolinguistic ideologies. In a diverse K-12 educational landscape, integrating CLRP is essential for fostering academic success and critical consciousness. We examine how CRP and LRP intersect to support the implementation of culturally relevant curricula and to dismantle deficit-based perspectives, empowering students’ agency and voice. This research underscores the importance of equipping teachers with the tools and understanding necessary to apply CLRP across various contexts. We identify implications related to professional development and policies that support educators’ ability to create inclusive environments that reflect all students’ lived experiences.
