School Bullying Targeting the Gender and Sexual Identities of AAPI Youth: Insights From California (Poster 8)

Fri, April 25, 3:20 to 4:50pm MDT (3:20 to 4:50pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

The bullying of AAPI youth is a persistent and pervasive challenge across California’s schools, particularly for AAPI youth who identify as LGBTQ. This study deepens the current evidence base on the experiences of anti-AAPI hate among youth by leveraging data from the seven most recent years of the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS), a large-scale statewide survey. We describe longitudinal patterns in the prevalence of bullying against the gender and sexual identities of AAPI youth between 2015-2021 in California’s schools and estimate how this prevalence differs between AAPI ethnic subgroups. We find that bullying of AAPI youth based on gender and sexual orientation differs within AAPI subgroups and gender identities, with elevated trends for Cambodian, Laotian, Hmong, and NHPI youth.
