Learning Spanish With a Mobile App Outside the Classroom

Fri, April 25, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 4

Abstract

This study investigated the role of Duolingo in student learning experiences in college-level Spanish classes over a nine-week period at a small nonresidential university in the United States. Fifty-two students participated in the study, using Duolingo outside of classroom sessions for language learning. We measured changes in students’ self-efficacy, control beliefs about learning, and satisfaction through pre- and post-surveys, and examined self-directed learning in depth via a post-survey and interviews. The results showed significant improvements in the measured variables, with students highly appreciating Duolingo’s contribution to their self-directed learning. Overall, the study suggests that Duolingo, when used as a supplementary learning tool outside of class, is an effective strategy for second language learning.
