Abstract

In a time of CRT bans and university neutrality, democracy requires active civic engagement among college students. Scholars have called for a deliberate approach to political learning in higher education, focusing on how campus environments impact political learning. Higher education institutions must live up to their proposed civic missions by encouraging conversations around politics and social justice. However, our understanding of how campus environments impact student of color political engagement, in particular during this turbulent political moment, is limited. Specifically, how students’ of color political learning and engagement are supported or impeded by their university’s campus climate is not well understood. Therefore, this study investigates how a culturally engaging campus environment impacts political learning and engagement for students of color.
