Sat, April 26, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 3B

Abstract

This exploratory study investigates teacher and student emotions during middle school science classroom discourse. Utilizing sentiment analysis (SA), we examined positively and negatively valenced utterances from five years of classroom transcripts. Additionally, classroom videos were qualitatively analyzed to examine classroom dynamics and activity features in which teacher and student emotions occurred. Our findings highlight the intricate relationship between teacher and student behaviors and emotional responses, offering insights for enhancing emotional engagement in science education.
