Abstract

In this study, we surveyed 130 K–12 teachers from one school district in New York about their perceptions of using artificial intelligence (AI). Questions elicited responses about teachers’ participation in and insights obtained from professional development (PD) on AI, their reasons for (not) participating in such PDs, use of AI tools, and concerns about using AI in teaching and learning. We found that most teachers did not have any experience in PD programs for AI. Teachers who participated in AI-focused PD sessions perceived diverse benefits of incorporating AI into their practice, such as more efficiency for common tasks like planning lessons and communicating with parents. Inquired teachers’ engagement reflects a growing awareness of AI’s relevance in education.
